Problem Gambling Plan Seeks Consultation

In New Zealand, the Ministry of Health is searching for submissions on its draft consultation document for preventing and minimizing gambling harm over 2007-2010. A service plan is included in the document, but it still needs assessment and levy calculations. In order to reduce gambling harm, the service plan offers to fund intervention and public health services. These services include research and workforce development. It is believed that many will benefit from this proposal and the services it is offering to provide.

We're at a stage where we need to increase our efforts to help problem gamblers and their significant others including family and what not as we are currently seeing only 12 percent of the problem,' said Krista Ferguson, chief executive of the Gambling Helpline. The Gambling Helpline will be reviewing the consultation document in the coming months and plans to make a submission. This consultation document could have a profound positive affect on those who possess a gambling problem or addiction.

Overall, the Gambling Helpline stated that it supported the Government move. Regarding the levy calculation, the draft includes the proposed levy rates that the various gambling sectors will contribute toward the total levy amount. Ferguson also commented that the organization was pleased with the overall approach taken in the consultation document and anticipates working with the Ministry of Health to develop the best outcomes for New Zealanders with enthusiasm.
