Casino Trend Causing Detroit Cage-Worker Layoff

As a follow up to our August 30th article about the switch to tokenless slots in the casino gambling industry, the MotorCity Casino in Detroit is laying off 130 employees next month as the company begins converting from metal currency (slots tokens), to electronic machines, which use computers to read the bar codes on paper-based tickets inserted.

The use of paper-tickets to record transactions on slot machines is a big industry trend. 86% of the customers surveyed say they prefer to use the paper tickets versus carrying around a bucket of tokens. The switch to computer-printed paper tickets means many floor attendants, money runners, slot technicians, and cage workers will be losing their jobs.

According to casino officials at the MotorCity Casino in Detroit, "those employees will not be asked to come back after October 20th".

MotorCity says customers have been asking for the change to token-less slots for a long time. Many customers like the token-less slots because they accept just about any denomination of bill($1, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100), they're more steril, they are more convenient to use, and provide more efficient ways of tracking payout accuracy.
