Louisiana casinos have had much pressure on them since Hurricane Katrina. They have been called upon to help get the state back on its feet economically. So far this year, they have responded.
The revenue numbers have come out for January, and state casinos won $199.8 million last month. That figure is higher than at the same period last year. January 2007 had the casinos winning $197 million.
The numbers were down from December, but that is typical of any year. The month of December is typically a higher revenue month than January.
The states riverboats were the big winners for the month of January. $136.7 million was won by the thirteen riverboats in the state. Slots at the four race tracks in Louisiana won $31.2 million for the month. $31.9 million was generated from Harrah's Entertainment's casino in New Orleans.
Although a lot of money, the figure would actually be higher if the state's three Indian casinos were counted. They are not required by law to release their figures to the state.
